MotorHead18 Equips F-250 with a Cradle Hitch-Mounted Superwinch

Off-roading, remote land management, and preparing for the unexpected all require gear you can unconditionally rely on. Don't take it from us alone - check out how MotorHead18 transformed his 2015 Ford F-250 into a workhorse. Tasked with clearing an 11-acre property late at night in the sweltering Texas heat, he needed serious visibility and dependable recovery power.

Let’s dive into how a combination of Westin lighting upgrades and the heavy-hitting Superwinch SX10 winch gave this F-250 the capability to tackle any project.

Reliable Recovery: Superwinch SX10 Midnight Black Edition

When building a reliable rig, quality always trumps quantity. MotorHead18 chose Westin and Superwinch products because he wanted high-quality engineering that installs easily and lasts a lifetime, keeping his truck looking professional without dealing with mismatched components or LED color temperatures.

The highlight of this F-250 build's front end is the Superwinch SX10 Midnight Black Edition. It's got a stealthy aesthetic that perfectly complements the truck’s dark exterior, and with a 10,000 lbs capacity, this winch is built for business.

After mounting the winch using a winch cradle hitch receiver mount that slides effortlessly into the front bumper, he hardwired the winch directly to the battery to ensure maximum amperage draw during heavy pulls. Outfitted with upgraded synthetic rope, the winch not only looks incredibly clean but also saves weight and is much easier to handle than traditional steel cable. The hitch receiver mount allows for front-to-back movement of the winch, and MotorHead18 has some plans for front and rear illumination upgrades to help with nighttime winching - more on that below.

It didn't take long for the Superwinch to prove its worth on the property. MotorHead18 put the SX10 to the test on a buried, stuck trailer, and the results were effortless:

I parked my truck about 15 ft away and was able to pull a severely stuck trailer out. There was a tree branch growing right underneath the trailer, but this winch just yanked it right out."

Beyond its raw pulling power, the SX10 features a wireless remote control. For anyone working in triple-digit heat, this means you can safely operate the winch from the air-conditioned comfort of the cab, a huge advantage for safe, comfortable solo recoveries.

Rock Lights and Light Bars

For ample lighting when working or winching, MotorHead18 relies on Westin lighting products:

Rear Visibility: Westin LED Rock Lights To illuminate the rear of the truck for late-night reversing, hitching, and winching, he installed a set of Westin LED Rock Lights along the rear bumper. Packing a massive punch for their size (3.2 in tall, 3.2 in wide, and 3 in in diameter), these lights easily cast a bright beam up to 20 ft behind the truck. The installation was straightforward: after drilling a single mounting hole for each light using a cobalt bit, he tucked the wiring safely behind the frame and ran it straight to the factory upfitter switches in the cab, wiring them into the aux switch.

Front Illumination: Westin LED Light Bars Up front, the truck was outfitted with a 10 in and a 30 in Westin single-row LED light bar, featuring the XP black face with a diamond plate pattern. Designed for versatility with an output of 30 to 250 watts, they were mounted directly to the mesh of his heavy-duty bumper. Using stainless steel bolts and heavy-duty washers, he secured the brackets and routed the wiring through the firewall to aux switch 2 on the factory 25-amp circuit. The result? A blindingly bright, clean setup that effortlessly pierces through the darkest wood lines.
