OutJeeping Jeep Cherokee SX Winch Install

Any seasoned off-roader knows that getting stuck isn’t a matter of if, but when. Whether you're rock crawling, overlanding, or just navigating deep rutted-out trails, having a reliable recovery system is a smart insurance policy for your rig.

Recently, Austin of the OutJeeping YouTube channel walked us through a masterclass in trail preparedness, outfitting his Jeep Cherokee’s custom off-road front bumper with a heavy-hitting Superwinch and a suite of Westin Automotive accessories. Let’s dive into his setup and see how he transformed this XJ into a self-reliant trail machine.

The Pinnacle of the Build: The 10,000 lbs Superwinch

The crown jewel of this Cherokee front end is the 10,000 lbs capacity SX Series Superwinch. While a lightweight XJ doesn't necessarily demand the pulling power of a one-ton truck, opting for a 10,000 lbs winch ensures the system will never be pushed past its limits, even when bogged down to the frame.

Austin selected a winch model that has sleek gray synthetic rope, pairing perfectly with his wheels. As many off-roaders and 4x4 veterans will point out, synthetic rope is the gold standard for most modern wheeling; it doesn't store volatile kinetic energy like traditional steel cable, making it significantly safer in the event of a line break, while simultaneously shedding valuable front-end weight. Because of the synthetic line, the kit utilizes a smooth aluminum hawse fairlead rather than a roller fairlead.

The installation process is straightforward, even for DIYers. Utilizing a standard winch bolt pattern, Austin made great use of the provided square nuts that slot effortlessly into the base of the winch, allowing him to easily thread the mounting bolts up from under the bumper. After securing the main 13 mm ground and routing the power cables directly to his aftermarket battery terminals, the winch was ready for action.

Winch Control Options

One of the standout features of this winch system is the versatile control options. The control box is completely removable and clockable, allowing it to be rotated to any 90-degree position depending on your bumper clearance. Furthermore, this winch includes a wireless remote to keep you safely out of the line of fire during a complex pull, as well as an illuminated wired remote. Austin highlighted this feature during his test run:

"This remote has a built-in battery, so that way you can find it in the dark and line up your connection properly."

Combined with a built-in drum light, nighttime recoveries are safer and easier to manage.

To protect his investment from harsh UV rays and corrosive winter road salt, Austin wisely capped off the install with a custom-fit Superwinch cover.

Building a Recovery Arsenal

A winch is only as good as the rigging supporting it. To maximize his setup, Austin invested in our Medium Duty Recovery Kit. Packed in an organized, multi-pocket bag, this kit provides all the essential rigging hardware:

  • Tree Saver Strap: Essential for protecting nature and preventing damage to your winch line.
  • Snatch Block: A vital tool that effectively doubles the pulling power of your winch and allows for complex angled pulls.
  • Flat Recovery Strap and D-Rings: Perfect for static towing.

For dynamic vehicle-to-vehicle recoveries, Austin upgraded to a 1 in by 30 ft kinetic recovery rope. Unlike a flat tow strap, kinetic ropes are designed to stretch, absorbing the shock of a pull and transferring that kinetic energy into a smooth, powerful extraction. He also added a receiver D-ring shackle for the rear of his Jeep, converting his standard tow hitch into a hefty rear recovery point.

Lighting the Way: Westin LED Cubes

No off-road build is complete without serious forward lighting. While the internet is flooded with cheap, unreliable light pods that flicker or burn out after a single season, Austin opted for the proven quality of Westin Automotive LED spot cubes.

Built with premium CREE LEDs and featuring a rugged black diamond plate background, these lights are engineered to pierce through pitch-black conditions. They're made with a plug-and-play harness complete with a relay and waterproof connectors so water intrusion and corrosion are never an issue.

Upgrade with Superwinch
