King Anytime's 1990 Ford Bronco: Equipping a Classic OBS with the Superwinch Scorpion

There is an undeniable allure to the OBS (Old Body Style) Ford Bronco. With its removable hardtop, boxy stance, and legendary V8 rumble, it’s a quintessential piece of American off-road history. Recently we joined our friend Gary of King Anytime, for a look at his 1990 Ford Bronco project. It’s a project that perfectly captures the spirit of off-roading: taking a rough-around-the-edges classic and transforming it into a capable, trail-ready daily driver.

And, of course, no dedicated trail rig is complete without a top-tier recovery setup.

The Foundation: A 1990 Ford Bronco with a 351 Windsor

Finding a clean classic SUV these days is getting tougher, but this 1990 Bronco build is starting off with the right bones. Under the hood sits the venerable 351 Windsor V8, a torque-heavy powerplant that is legendary in the Ford truck community for its reliability and low-end grunt.

Like any 30-plus-year-old rig, this Bronco came with its fair share of character. From a few notorious rust spots and a busted driver's seat to the classic rear main seal and oil pan leaks, it’s a true project vehicle. The plan? Keep the suspension geometry relatively stock, sort out the maintenance, and build a reliable weekend warrior that can handle a little dirt without losing its daily drivability.

Prepping for Hoonigan Activities

As any seasoned off-roader knows, you don’t take a heavy, full-size SUV onto the trails without a rock-solid backup plan. The OBS Bronco tips the scales at over 4,500 pounds stock, and once you add larger tires, a roll cage, and gear, that weight only goes up. When a rig this size sinks into the mud or gets high-centered on a tricky line, you need serious pulling power to get out safely.

Knowing that his driving style was going to put the old Ford to the test, Gary made the smartest upgrade you can make before hitting the dirt: installing a reliable recovery winch.

When it came time to choose the right gear, the decision was simple. In his own words:

"It's been a long time coming, but I finally got a Superwinch Scorpion winch for the Bronco. Now I can pull myself out of situations when I'm doing Hoonigan activities because you know if I'm driving, it's gonna get stuck...so I might as well get the best in the game so I can pull myself out!"

Why the Superwinch Scorpion is the Ultimate Recovery Tool

The Superwinch Scorpion is engineered exactly for builds like this. When outfitting a heavy, full-size rig like a classic Bronco, you need a winch with a pulling capacity of at least 1.5 times the vehicle's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR).

The Scorpion delivers that aggressive pulling power with unmatched reliability. It’s built to withstand the elements, featuring rugged construction and advanced motor efficiency to ensure you spend less time stuck and more time enjoying the ride.

Upgrade Your Rig Today

You don't have to be behind the wheel of a classic '90s Bronco to benefit from elite recovery gear. Whether you are building an overland rig, a rock crawler, or a dedicated mud truck, having equipment you can trust is non-negotiable.
