Which chassis do I have?

Let’s start with a quick breakdown of what the XJ / ZJ / WJ chassis codes represent, and how they affect your winching options.

XJ: Jeep Cherokee (1984–01): The XJ is the boxy compact SUV that essentially pioneered the modern unibody SUV market. It is famous for its iconic angular shape, lightweight design, and the virtually indestructible 4.0L inline-6 engine.

ZJ: Jeep Grand Cherokee (1993–98): The ZJ was the 1st-gen Grand Cherokee, a larger, more luxurious brother to the XJ. It featured a slightly rounder body, a coil-spring suspension on both axles, and introduced V8 engine options to the lineup.

WJ: Jeep Grand Cherokee (1999–04): The WJ represents the 2nd-gen Grand Cherokee. A complete redesign from the ZJ, it offered a wider track, more aerodynamic body, advanced 4WD systems (like Quadra-Drive), and the new 4.7L PowerTech V8 engine.

How do I mount a winch safely?

Because the Cherokee lacks the traditional body-on-frame design common to other Jeep models, bolting a winch directly to the stock bumper can rip the metal apart during a hard pull. The Cherokee’s unibody design means you must use tie-in brackets or frame stiffeners to extend the mounting points along the chassis - or - upgrade to a winch-ready bumper with built-in tie-ins to safely distribute the massive pulling forces. You may also have to slightly modify the rounded plastic bodywork and radiator surrounds on some Cherokees to tuck the winch into place.

How much does your Cherokee actually weigh?

You want a winch rated for at least 1.5 times your vehicle’s loaded weight, and a gutted Cherokee weighs a fraction of a fully decked-out Grand Cherokee carrying a full camp load. As a rule, go larger than you think you need. There aren’t too many downsides to extra winching capacity, only you do need to make sure your winch isn’t stronger than its mounts (check the rating on your bumper/frame stiffeners/etc).

Can my electrical system handle it?

Stock batteries can’t always keep up with the amps a winch draws under load. To avoid stalling out or killing your battery, you may need to upgrade your battery or electrical setup to gain higher cold cranking amps (CCA) and reserve capacity (RC). What size winch do I need for my Cherokee / Grand Cherokee?

The golden rule of recovery is to choose a winch with a pulling capacity that is at least 1.5 times your Jeep’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) - not just the curb weight.

If you tow a trailer off-road, then you will need to base your calculations on the gross combined weight rating (GCWR). This is the GVW plus the trailer weight.

For Cherokee (XJ) Models (1984–2001): An 8,000 to 9,000 lb. winch is ample for a standard XJ unibody rig with standard bumpers and no heavy mods - you’ll get plenty of pulling power without adding unnecessary front-end weight.

For Grand Cherokee (ZJ/WJ) Models (1993–2004): Because of their heavier V8 engine options and overall larger footprints, a 10,000 to 12,000 lb. capacity winch is best. If your ZJ or WJ is loaded down with heavy steel bumpers, larger tires, and overlanding gear, be sure to err on the side of more pulling power.

Remember that these are general guidelines - every build is unique. Additionally, when mounting a heavy-duty winch on any of these older XJ/ZJ/WJ platforms, ensure your factory alternator (often ranging from 60A to 136A depending on the year) can handle the load, or consider upgrading to a high-output alternator and a robust BCI Group 34 or 65 battery.

Is there such a thing as too much winch capacity?

Generally, no, only you have to check the rated capacity of your mounting system before you go too big.

Still, in almost all cases, more winch capacity is better:

  • If your Cherokee is stuck in sand or mud, the resistance of the sand/mud can double or even triple the effective “weight” of the vehicle, meaning you might need to use a snatch block and the hardest-pulling winch you have to get unstuck.
  • The amount of line you pull out has a big impact on pulling power, too. If you’re not able to pull the line out until you’re down to one layer of rope on the drum, you’ll get less power. If your winch is “oversized,” you’ve got more flexibility.
  • If you’re pulling out a friend in a heavy vehicle, you’ll be glad you have the extra capacity.

For all of these reasons, we’d recommend getting the biggest winch you can safely mount.

Should I choose synthetic rope or steel cable?

Debates on this topic are always lively. Ultimately, both synthetic and steel rope have their place on the trail:

  • Synthetic Rope: The modern favorite for Jeepers. It’s significantly lighter (reducing front-end suspension sag), floats on water, is easier on the hands, and crucially, stores far less kinetic energy under a load - meaning it’s much safer if a line snaps. However, it is susceptible to abrasion on sharp rocks. Cherokee / Grand Cherokee models can be prone to suspension sag, and synthetic rope shaves off about 15 to 20 pounds compared to steel - a huge plus.
  • Steel Cable: The old-school workhorse. It’s highly abrasion-resistant, durable, and generally more budget-friendly. If you do a lot of utility work, skidding logs, or winch in highly abrasive environments, steel is still the preferable option. For most recreational off-roaders and rock crawlers, synthetic is the way to go.

Will a winch drain my Cherokee / Grand Cherokee’s battery? Do I need a dual-battery setup?

Not necessarily. A dual-battery setup is a great upgrade for hardcore overlanders running 12V fridges, onboard air, and extensive trail lights. However, a healthy single battery is usually sufficient for standard recoveries. You’ll want a high-quality battery with at least 650 cold cranking amps (CCA).

Remember: Keep your engine running while winching so your alternator can help carry the electrical load. Because factory XJ, ZJ, and WJ alternators generally have lower amperage than modern Jeeps, it is important to give your winch short breaks (with the engine running) during longer recoveries so your battery can catch up.

How do I mount a winch to my Cherokee (XJ) or Grand Cherokee (ZJ/WJ)?

You can’t just bolt a winch directly to the bumper or the frame, unfortunately. You’ll need to find a winch plate to mount or go with an all new bumper. Whatever mounting solution you choose, make sure the steel and tie-in hardware are rated to handle the maximum pulling capacity of your winch. Winches are rugged, but they aren’t entirely maintenance-free.

  • If you submerge your Cherokee in deep water or mud, it’s a good habit to unspool the line, clean it out, and let it dry afterward.
